Standby generator maintenance plans combine scheduled work with service benefits that may or may not save the household money. An annual visit, priority scheduling, a dispatch waiver and a repair discount are different purchases. A plan’s price does not mean repairs, a replacement battery or every emergency call are included.
The October 2026 examples below use two providers’ own published prices in Michigan and New York. They are local offers for supported equipment rather than a national maintenance average. Compare the included work, generator eligibility and renewal terms before comparing the annual totals.
Key figures
- $289 Landmark one-time essential generator maintenance
- $329 Landmark Standard yearly generator maintenance plan
- $749 Landmark Premium yearly generator maintenance plan
Published plans buy different scopes
Landmark’s one-time $289 essential service covers its named core maintenance items, while the $329 Standard plan adds an inspection, battery and charger testing, a functional automatic-transfer test, reporting and service priority. Plus is $429 annually. Premium is $749 and adds a six-month operational wellness check, not a second full oil-and-filter maintenance service.

The extra $40 between Landmark’s one-time service and Standard is not simply a membership surcharge for the same visit. Their scopes differ. Ask the provider to identify which inspections and tests the household wants and what buying them without a plan would cost. A lower figure is only cheaper for the desired work when it reaches the same endpoint.
Waived callouts can justify a higher fee
Landmark charges Standard members $79 for a normal-hours generator dispatch and waives that fee for Plus and Premium. The step from Standard to Plus is $100 per year. One waived $79 dispatch leaves the Plus example $21 more expensive; two waive $158 and exceed the extra fee by $58, before repair charges and other benefits.
That arithmetic does not predict two breakdowns. Use the provider’s eligibility and the household’s past service needs rather than buying a plan on an assumed number of failures. A dispatch waiver also does not waive the diagnosis or repair work that follows unless the terms say so.
Plus’s eligible-work discount is 5% on the first $2,500 per term, a maximum of $125. If there are no callouts, $2,000 of eligible work would generate a $100 discount and equal the Standard-to-Plus price difference. Confirm which charges qualify; discounts do not automatically cover plan fees, dispatch charges or every outside expense.
Premium’s listed 10% discount has a $250 maximum under the same first-$2,500 limit. Its $320 step above Plus is greater than the $125 maximum additional discount over Plus. The extra check, priority and dispatch provisions therefore need to justify the remainder; the repair percentage alone cannot recover that difference within the published cap.
After-hours rules matter more than a headline waiver
Read the dispatch schedule for the appointment time. Landmark lists $189 for Standard after hours and $99 for Plus through 10 PM. After 10 PM, Plus is also $189. Premium offers one non-holiday after-hours waiver per term; holiday terms and later calls are different.
A household comparing plans because of nighttime outages should use those conditions, not the daytime $79 waiver in every example. One Plus evening dispatch before 10 PM saves $90 against Standard’s fee, nearly the $100 tier difference. It does not create that saving on a later-night appointment under the listed schedule.
Ask what “priority” means in the provider’s service arrangement and whether any response time is promised. Priority scheduling and a guaranteed arrival deadline are not the same benefit. A severe regional storm can create more demand than an annual plan comparison suggests.
The long-outage budget places service readiness beside food, communication and other tasks. A maintenance membership should support the backup plan without being mistaken for a promise that the generator will never stop.
Longer contracts change the apparent annual saving
TZ Electric publishes three-year annual prices of $269 for Bronze, $299 for Silver and $399 for Gold, compared with one-year prepaid totals of $299, $328.90 and $438.90. Multiplying the three-year annual figures gives $807, $897 and $1,197 over the commitment if those rates apply throughout.
Its three-year monthly prices are $23, $25 and $34. Over 36 payments, those totals are $828, $900 and $1,224. Monthly and annual payment routes therefore do not always produce the same contract total. Compare the selected payment arrangement, not an annual figure with a convenient rounded monthly equivalent.
Three Bronze years at the one-year $299 price would total $897 if that price remained unchanged. The three-year annual route is $90 less in that illustrative comparison. That saving is partly payment for a commitment; it is not a guaranteed discount without cancellation consequences.
TZ’s terms include different cancellation charges before and after annual maintenance. Read the agreement before enrolling, especially if moving or replacing the generator is possible during the term. Landmark’s annual plans also renew automatically unless renewal is canceled under their terms. Record the renewal date and cancellation process beside the service schedule.
The generator’s manual controls required maintenance
Generac’s product-information system uses the serial or model number to retrieve instructions. A generic internet interval should not override the manual for a particular generation of generator. Calendar intervals, operating hours and conditions can require work at different times from the membership’s scheduled annual visit.
Ask how extended outage operation affects oil checks, service scheduling and additional maintenance charges. A plan with one annual service is not automatically sufficient after heavy use. The invoice should show the items replaced, observed condition and recorded operating hours rather than just “generator tune-up.”
Separate replacement batteries and repairs from inspection. A battery check reports condition; it does not necessarily supply a new battery. Likewise, a functional transfer check is not the same as a calibrated load-bank test. Ask which result each test provides and retain the report for future service.
The installed transfer-switch guide covers the connection equipment that also needs a place in the service scope. Do not assume a generator-only visit includes every component of the home backup installation.
Use the generator’s manual and authorized service route for work on the installed system. Automatic starting and electrical connections create hazards; a price comparison is not a servicing procedure or permission to modify internal wiring.
Choose one-time service when it delivers the required maintenance and the household does not value membership extras enough to pay for them. Choose a plan when its inspection scope, likely eligible callouts and service benefits justify the fee. In either case, keep repairs, required extra maintenance and renewal terms visible in the budget.
Questions people ask
What is a published one-time generator maintenance price?
Landmark lists $289 essential maintenance for its qualifying residential air-cooled Generac and Honeywell equipment. Its scope is narrower than the $329 annual Standard plan.
When could a higher plan recover its extra cost?
For Landmark Standard versus Plus, the $100 difference is less than two $79 normal-hours dispatch fees. Repairs remain separate and the waived appointments must qualify.
Does the Premium six-month visit include another oil change?
Landmark describes it as an operational wellness check rather than another full oil-and-filter maintenance service. Other providers' twice-yearly plans can have different scopes.
Is a three-year monthly plan cheaper than annual payment?
Compare totals. TZ Bronze at $23 for 36 months is $828, while its $269 annual three-year route totals $807 before other charges and contract conditions.
