Flood Cleanup Cost: Drying Equipment and Service Fees

See published drying and assessment fees, calculate equipment-days, and separate flood cleanup, demolition, moisture checks and rebuilding costs.

A flood cleanup price should identify the contaminated materials being removed, the equipment being used and the evidence that drying is finished. Water extraction alone does not leave a house restored. Demolition, waste handling, moisture monitoring and rebuilding can be separate stages with separate bills.

The published fees below are ServiceMaster Recovery Services’ own equipment-rental and assessment rates associated with its Wisconsin service operation, checked in October 2026. They reveal how daily charges accumulate. They are not a national flood-restoration range or instructions to rent fans and attempt contaminated cleanup without an assessment.

Key figures

  • $25 ServiceMaster Sahara air mover, daily rental
  • $35 ServiceMaster AirPath air mover, daily rental
  • $65 ServiceMaster standard dehumidifier, daily rental

Equipment is billed by quantity and time

An equipment-day is one unit charged for one day. Four air movers running for three billed days create twelve equipment-days. That distinction is useful when a quote lists “fans” without saying whether the price is for a single unit, the whole group or the entire drying period.

Daily rates make duration financially important, but they do not establish a drying schedule. A room’s size, wet materials, contamination, access and moisture readings affect the work. Ask the contractor how readings are recorded and how continued rental is approved, rather than asking for a guaranteed end date based only on a floor area.

A worked budget exposes charges outside drying rental

Using the published rates, four Sahara units cost $100 per day and one LGR dehumidifier adds $85. Three assumed billed days therefore cost $555. One assumed day of extraction adds $100, taking the equipment example to $655. The three-day duration and equipment quantities are hypothetical, not a prescribed setup.

The provider lists $75 for delivery or pickup within its stated 40-mile round-trip area from the warehouse. If delivery and pickup each incur that fee, the example adds $150 and reaches $805. Confirm whether both legs are charged; the published line should not be read as promising $75 covers all movements.

This subtotal still lacks removal labor, damaged contents, disposal, electrical use, extra monitoring and rebuilding. If the contractor’s bill has those lines, include them before comparing it with a equipment-only rental figure. If it omits them, ask whether another company will charge separately.

The first-day water-damage guide places documentation and the order of response around the cleanup work. An equipment calculation is most useful when it sits inside that wider response, rather than replacing it.

Assessment and an estimate are different services

ServiceMaster’s $165 service call includes a technician visit for assessment, equipment setup or pickup, or help with flood work, limited to one hour including travel. Its $250 normal-hours damage estimate and $350 after-hours estimate are separately described services. Do not add all three automatically as though every restoration requires them in that combination.

Ask which service is being booked, what report or assistance it produces, and whether any fee is credited against later work. An estimate credit reduces the eventual bill only under the provider’s terms; it does not make a visit free if another company performs the restoration.

Separate inspection from authorization. Paying for a report should not become permission for unlimited demolition or equipment rental. Ask how discoveries inside walls or beneath floors change the scope and what approval happens before extra charges accrue. The FTC’s contractor guidance supports comparing estimates, checking providers and reviewing the contract before payment.

Photograph affected materials when it is safe to do so and retain the item inventory, reports, authorizations and invoices. Coverage and reimbursement depend on the policy and claim, so a contractor’s ability to provide an estimate to an insurer is not a promise that every line will be paid. The records and documents guide helps keep the response organized.

Contamination changes the removal and cleaning scope

Storm floodwater is not equivalent to a small clean-water leak. EPA warns that floodwater can contain sewage and hazardous chemicals. The quote should identify contaminated porous materials, cleaning tasks and waste handling rather than presenting a longer fan rental as the answer to every flooded room.

Ask whether the proposed service includes moving contents, removal of damaged wall or floor materials, containment, cleaning and disposal. Also establish what it excludes: structural repair, new finishes, appliances, ductwork or other rebuilding. A cleared room and a finished room are different deliverables.

Removal and reconstruction can be separate billed stages. This stripped room illustrates the building work; the photograph does not establish what caused its condition or how contamination was assessed.

Do not judge whether a material is dry by its surface alone. Ask which moisture readings will be taken, where they will be recorded and what evidence supports equipment removal. Retaining those records makes a later dispute about duration easier to understand than a verbal statement that the job “looked dry.”

Completion distinguishes drying from rebuilding

Before approving the proposal, identify its endpoint. Is it extraction only, removal and drying, or a restored room with finishes replaced? Include equipment retrieval and debris disposal in that description. A contractor who finishes a drying scope has not necessarily left a habitable space or finished a renovation.

Safe entry precedes the cleanup budget

Follow local instructions and have electrical and structural hazards cleared by the responsible professionals. EPA says not to enter until electricity is off and to avoid a building with signs of instability. Do not approach a wet panel or operate equipment in a flooded space to begin a cost-saving cleanup.

At handover, reconcile equipment quantities and billed days with the records, collect the moisture or condition report, and list remaining repairs. Obtain a separate rebuilding price if finishes or damaged systems remain. The best comparison is between proposals reaching the same endpoint, not a low extraction price and another contractor’s full reconstruction total.

Questions people ask

How much do drying fans and dehumidifiers cost per day?

Published ServiceMaster examples include $25 for a Sahara air mover and $85 for an LGR dehumidifier. Those are equipment-rental rates, not a complete restoration price.

Will three days of equipment restore a flooded room?

The three-day example is arithmetic only. The building, contamination, materials and moisture measurements determine the work and duration.

Is an estimate fee added to the final bill?

This provider says its $250 normal-hours or $350 after-hours damage estimate is applied to the bill if it performs the work. Confirm the booked service and credit terms.

Does cleanup include replacing drywall and flooring?

Only if the contract includes rebuilding. Identify extraction, removal, cleaning, drying, disposal and reconstruction as separate stages.
